Sulfate Reducing
Bacteria
Hydrogen sulfide (gas) and dissolved sulfide (liquid) are a by-product of the sulfate reducing bacteria life cycle
Attaches to the interior surfaces of the pipe walls
Consumes nutrients in wastewater and requires oxygen for respiration
Preferential order of oxygen sources:
- Dissolved oxygen (usually present)
- Nitrates (rarely present)
- Sulfates (naturally abundant)
Can not survive in wastewater with elevated pH levels (pH > 11)
