Sulfate Reducing Bacteria

• Hydrogen sulfide (gas) and dissolved sulfide (liquid) are a by-product of the sulfate reducing bacteria life cycle

• Attaches to the interior surfaces of the pipe walls

• Consumes nutrients in wastewater and requires oxygen for respiration

• Preferential order of oxygen sources:

  • Dissolved oxygen (usually present)
  • Nitrates (rarely present)
  • Sulfates (naturally abundant)
