Occurs when anaerobic conditions develop in the wastewater
Amount generated is directly proportional to the detention time in the sewer
Rate of production doubles for every 10 C (50 F) increase in temperature
pH governs the ratio of hydrogen sulfide gas to dissolved sulfide in solution
Hydrogen sulfide gas is not very soluble; easily released to the atmosphere during turbulent flow conditions
