• Occurs when anaerobic conditions develop in the wastewater

• Amount generated is directly proportional to the detention time in the sewer

• Rate of production doubles for every 10 C (50 F) increase in temperature

• pH governs the ratio of hydrogen sulfide gas to dissolved sulfide in solution

• Hydrogen sulfide gas is not very soluble; easily released to the atmosphere during turbulent flow conditions
